Using Dental Implants To Replace Teeth

The use of dental implants, to replace lost teeth, is a testament to the resilience of a treatment method that has been around for thousands of years. Dental implants are so successful that we are actually starting to change how people view what their options are with tooth replacements. For most people, the idea of tooth loss is limited to people in their older age, a myth that often delays not taking great care of your teeth. The truth is that tooth loss affects people of all ages and all demographics.

Timeless Method

The American Academy of Implant Dentistry, AAID, finds that 69 percent of people over the age of 35 have lost at least one tooth. Teeth are critical for multiple functions. First, they are the starting place of all human digestion. Second, they are what we use to enunciate and form words. Third, they are the foundation upon which we base certain social signals like smiling.

All of these make teeth critically important to modern human life. This makes it ironic that we are using a treatment that dates back thousands of years to the ancient Mayans. In the old days, the ancient Mayans would hammer pieces of bone or shell into a person’s gums to give them new “fake teeth”. Today, we have divested with the hammers and the shells for modern materials and the benefits of medical science.

However, the basic idea of replacing a lost tooth with an implant remains the same. The teeth we are able to secure, look and feel exactly like the natural teeth around them to the point where, after a while, even the patient will forget that he or she has a fake tooth on a dental implant.

Space Age Material

It is interesting to note that NASA uses the same material to make space objects, including parts of the spacecraft, out of the same material we use to fabricate dental implants. Titanium is one of the most durable and strongest metals that holds application in many places. Titanium can withstand a tremendous strain, including titanium that is in the mouth. In addition to the strength this metal brings to dental implants, it is also extremely biocompatible, meaning that it fuses effortlessly with the bone for maximum stability.

Dental implants serve a dual purpose

Dental implants provide an anchor for the new teeth, also known as dental crowns. The implant helps the crown remain stable and strong. Dental implants also provide the jaw with much-needed stimulation, which under normal circumstances is provided by the root of the tooth. When the root is lost, this stimulation ceases, often leading to a deterioration of the quality and density of the bone mass in the jawbone. Dental implants help the jawbone to regain lost mass.

Reasons flossing can improve your oral health

What can they eat? Healthy alternatives for children with braces

Staring at the pamphlet titled “Do Not Eat” with images of hard candies, potato chips, soda, pretzels, popcorn, chewy candy and more, 10-year-old Daniel sighs in defeat. Daniel now wears braces and must say goodbye to all the food he has grown to love in the first ten years of his life. Daniel’s mother hates to see her son this way but understands the importance of braces. Eating any of the foods listed above can damage the braces and prolong the amount of time the child needs to wear braces.

Fortunately, there are meals and foods that Daniel can eat, which are delicious and do not risk harming the braces in the process.

Oatmeal

A simple breakfast item that is easy to prepare in a hurry, oatmeal is a great option for breakfast. The oatmeal will easily wash out with water and brush one’s teeth after the meal. While a child may not jump at the idea of having oatmeal for breakfast, a parent can help mix in a little honey and different types of fruit for better flavor. Oatmeal has multiple options for the child to pick and choose a favorite flavor while being healthy.

Pasta

Pasta is another delicious option for children with braces. From spaghetti to ravioli, cooked pasta is smooth, easily chewable and easy to clean out of one’s teeth. The child with braces just needs to be careful when cleaning his or her teeth after dinner and check for any stray bits of pasta.

Lean proteins

In association with the American Dental Association, ADA, mouthhealthykids.org explains that lean proteins need to be a part of one’s diet. Eggs made with milk will have a fluffy texture to them that kids with braces can eat with little issue. Lean proteins can also help to strengthen teeth as well, including skinless poultry and fish. Be sure to cut the food into smaller bites to help prevent pieces from getting stuck in the brackets or wires.

Certain fruits and vegetables

Mouthhealthy.org writes that since certain fruits and vegetables “are high in water and fiber, they help to balance the sugars they contain and help to clean your teeth.” However, large fruit, such as apples, may be easier to eat when cut up into smaller slices. With corn on the cob, a parent will need to cut the corn off of the cob and have the child eat it in individual pieces. More importantly, have the child brush and floss after to ensure that there are no bits stuck in the braces or teeth.

Xylitol

One difficult area for both parents and children who wear braces is the inability to eat candy. Children with a sweet tooth have to hold back from eating many forms of candy for the issue of causing more harm than good to the braces. Fortunately, lollipops and other candy containing xylitol may be a solution. According to Xylitol.org, “Xylitol is a natural sweetener derived from the fibrous parts of plants,” which “does not break down like sugar and can help keep a neutral pH level in the mouth.” As long as a child with braces does not bite down on the xylitol lollipop, then a child will not harm the braces and help his or her teeth stay healthy.

These are only a few options that children with braces can eat. The most important part, regardless of what the child eats, is that the child keeps up regular dental hygiene and does not break a bracket or knock a wire loose. Damage to the braces will not only cause immense pain for the child but will also risk lengthening the amount of time the child will need to wear braces. For more information on what foods are helpful or harmful to braces, give us a call.

Orthodontics Can Improve Your Smile and Bite

We know that orthodontics can improve your smile and bite, regardless of your age. Many of our adult patients live under the impression that they cannot straighten their teeth or that the process will take a long time. This is often due to an appointment as a child where they were told that they would need to wear braces for three to four years. In the past, it could indeed take three to four years to straighten teeth that were severely crooked. Most people do not want to go through a treatment process that is so lengthy, and we understand this. Fortunately, times have changed. It no longer takes this long to straighten teeth, and most people can complete their procedure in 18 months. This is excellent news for adults who long for a beautiful smile, but also need the process to be convenient along the way. Our solutions are diverse. We focus on providing solutions that work now and in the future. When you visit our Indianapolis office, we will discuss all possible options.

Orthodontics can help you if you are missing teeth.

The majority of adults will lose at least one tooth in their lifetime. Even those who brush and floss regularly can lose a tooth in an accident or due to an infection. While this is common, it creates a perception challenge for many adults who want straight teeth but do not know if they can obtain them with orthodontics care. We encourage you to visit our office, even if you have lost a tooth. Most of the time, we can begin the process without you first needing to replace it. Many of our patients will replace the tooth mid-way through or wait until the end of the treatment. We can let you know which solution will work best and what the timing of the procedure will be when you come in for a dental exam. Just remember that it doesn’t matter what the condition of your teeth are now, we can work with you to create a treatment plan that addresses all of your oral health and appearance challenges.

Orthodontics can fit your lifestyle.

If you have a busy lifestyle and are unsure of whether or not braces will fit into it, give us a call. Orthodontics is more convenient than it used to be. Braces are not only smaller than before but the treatment takes less time than it used to. There are also clear ceramic braces that blend into your teeth and removable aligners that one can wear as an alternative to braces. Since there is more than just one solution, you can select the treatment option that you think will best fit your lifestyle. We can go over what life is like when wearing each solution during your consultation. This way, you can select an option that will work to fix your teeth long term, but will not cause you stress. For more information, we invite you to call our Indianapolis} office at (317) 218-9901 and schedule an appointment today.

Dental Restorations Will Preserve Your Natural Teeth

In our Indianapolis office, we use dental restorations to preserve teeth that would otherwise have to be pulled.  It is incredibly important to keep your natural teeth in place for as long as possible.  Most people think of their teeth and consider their smile or how they need teeth to chew.  Both are true and good reasons to keep your smile in excellent health.  Still, there is an even greater reason – your jawbone.  If your tooth falls out and isn’t replaced, with something like an implant, you could experience significant bone loss that eventually changes the appearance of your face.  Considering how everything in the body works together, our job is to restore teeth so that they can continue performing their critical functions.

There are several ways that we can do so, and the recommended treatment plan will depend on the extent of the damage.  If, for example, you simply have cavities, we will remove the decayed portion of your tooth and use a dental filling to restore it.  This can be done with a tooth-colored filling that looks entirely natural. If the damage is more extensive like a crack, chip or the enamel has worn away, we will need to consider other cosmetic solutions. Dental restorations like veneers and crowns are often preferred for adults while youths may prefer dental bonding.  A bonding procedure can be completed in one session as a tooth-colored material is applied to the tooth, shaped, then hardened using a dental light.  Even chipped teeth can be restored using this method.

A dental veneer and dental crown work to restore the more significant damage and both operate in a similar fashion.  The main difference is that a veneer is a thin shell that is placed on top of the natural tooth where a dental crown surrounds the tooth.  In order to prepare a damaged tooth for either of these procedures, enamel must be removed from the surface of the tooth so that the restorative material will lay flat once placed.  This is done in the first visit where an impression is also taken of the teeth.  In order to protect the damaged and exposed tooth, a temporary veneer or crown will be placed on it that can be worn until the dental lab is done creating the permanent one.

Once the permanent veneer or crown is ready, patients return to our Indianapolis office to have it bonded into place.  First, we will make any last minute adjustments and ensure that it is a perfect match.  In the case of a dental crown, we also need to check the bite to ensure that it fits correctly with the surrounding teeth.  If it does, we can complete the procedure.  Both of these dental restorations are designed to match your natural teeth so they will look perfect once in place.  Our restorations will allow you to eat like normal and bite down without discomfort.  Most importantly, your smile will remain healthy and intact.  To get started, call (317) 218-9901 and schedule a dental exam.

Why You Should Plan for a Teeth Whitening Treatment Before Your Wedding

If you are getting married, call our office to schedule your teeth whitening treatment. This is one of the most important and memorable days in most people’s lives. Whether you are planning a grand affair for your 300 friends or an intimate gathering with your close family, it is highly likely you will spend a couple of hours posing for pictures taken by a professional photographer.

On top of that, your friends and family will be on hand to snap photos with their smartphones and post them to Facebook. With pictures being snapped from every angle, it is important that you look and feel your very best. While planning your pre-wedding exercise routine and looking for the perfect dress, we encourage you to also consider your teeth and how your smile will impact your appearance.

Both men and women claim that a smile is one of the very first things they notice when meeting a person and that an attractive smile is a major factor in how attractive they deem someone to be. On a day as special as your wedding, you should make sure your smile presents you in the best possible light. The first thing we recommend is that you schedule an appointment to have your teeth cleaned.

If they are full of plaque and tartar, your smile will look dirty and unhealthy, giving a terrible impression. This is also important for ensuring you do not have any sudden toothaches while walking down the aisle. While this is a critical first step, it will not give you a bright and brilliant smile. For that, you will need a teeth whitening treatment.

Our patients are delighted with the results they see after a professional whitening. This is because we can turn back the clock, making you appear younger and more refreshed by eliminating the deep stains and discoloration that have settled into your teeth. Yellow and stained teeth are a sign of age and poor health, so by simply whitening them, you will look better. Once you have decided to do so, it is important to understand the differences between whitening solutions so you can select the best option for you.

The solution matters

Whether you buy a whitening kit from the store or visit our dental office, a whitening solution will be put on your teeth that will likely contain some level of peroxide. That is where the similarities end. The type of peroxide in our solution is stronger than what you can buy in the store. It is designed to penetrate your enamel and begin the process of oxidization, so the molecules inside of your teeth will reflect less light and your teeth will appear colorless or bright white. What you buy in the store will typically only remove the surface stains, so your teeth will still look slightly yellow.

Comfort is important

When you get a teeth whitening store-bought kit, the trays will be designed to fit everyone and will not be as secure or snug as what we can provide you with. For this reason, your experience will be far more comfortable when whitening your teeth with the help of a dentist.
